Fuel Additives: Are They Worth the Money?

According to PretCarburant.ro data, a full tank of 50 liters of gasoline costs on average 432 lei today, and the decision to also invest in additives can be well justified under certain conditions, but often it's just an additional cost. The fuel additive market is vast, promising everything from injector cleaning to increased engine power and reduced consumption. But what is myth and what is reality?

We objectively analyze the usefulness of these products, based on our experience in monitoring the fuel market and the operating principles of modern engines. We want to help you understand when additives can bring a real benefit to your car and when it would be wiser to focus on choosing quality fuel from a trusted station, as found on our map.

What are fuel additives and what are they used for?

Fuel additives are specially formulated chemical substances intended to be added to the car's tank, alongside gasoline or diesel. Their main role is to improve certain fuel properties or to protect engine components. We are referring here to detergents that clean deposits, anti-corrosion agents that prevent rust, stabilizers that maintain fuel quality long-term, or agents that modify the octane number or cetane index.

Practically, when we refuel the car with gasoline, at an average price of 8.65 lei/L, or with diesel at 9.43 lei/L, we want that fuel to be burned as efficiently as possible, and the engine to operate at optimal parameters. Additives come with the promise to support this goal, addressing specific problems such as carbon accumulation on injectors or protecting the fuel system against wear.

Diesel additives can also include cetane number improvers, which enhance combustion, or anti-gel agents, essential during winter to prevent the solidification of diesel, whose average freezing temperature is higher than that of gasoline.

We recommend their use especially for older diesel cars with high mileage, but also preventively, to maintain modern injection systems, sensitive to impurities, in good condition. In general, for most drivers and modern cars, consistent use of premium fuel is sufficient to ensure good maintenance of the fuel system and engine.

However, there are specific situations when a separate additive can provide additional benefits. For example, for older cars that have accumulated considerable deposits, or for those used in severe operating conditions, an intensive treatment with a specialized aftermarket additive can be useful. The average price of 95 gasoline is 8.65 lei/L, while the premium variant can be slightly more expensive. The price difference between standard and premium fuels (which already include additives) can sometimes be less than the cost of a quality separate additive, so it's worth weighing your options.

Are there risks or disadvantages to using additives?

Yes, there are several risks and disadvantages associated with the use of fuel additives, especially if they are not used correctly. One of the most common risks is overdosing, which can lead to effects contrary to those desired, such as additional deposits, damage to gaskets, or even problems with exhaust gas treatment systems (catalytic converter, particulate filter). Also, using an additive unsuitable for the engine type (e.g., gasoline additive in a diesel engine) can cause serious damage.

Another disadvantage is unnecessary cost. It is essential to accurately record data before and after use, to have a basis for comparison. Attempting to solve a serious mechanical problem with an additive can delay correct diagnosis and worsen the situation, leading to much higher repair costs. The best advice is to prevent problems by using good fuel and, if necessary, a suitable additive, but not to rely on them to avoid a visit to the mechanic when the warning signs are evident.
