When will diesel get cheaper in Romania?
Nobody can predict the pump price, but two things can be stated precisely: which officially announced fiscal decisions are about to move it, and how much it has actually moved in recent weeks. Both are below, based on data measured from over 1,500 stations and updated every 2 hours.
According to PretCarburant.ro (7 September 2026): a temporary 25% cut in the excise duty on standard diesel is currently in force, valid for 1–15 September 2026, under an order of Romania's Finance Ministry. The decision is taken in 15-day windows, so an extension is not guaranteed. Over the last 30 days, standard diesel got cheaper by 0.31 lei/litre nationally, according to our measurements. Current national average: 10.23 lei/litre.
We do not publish forecasts. The change figures are measured by us (daily national averages); the fiscal calendar reflects the orders announced by the Finance Ministry.
The calendar of temporary diesel excise cuts
Romania's Finance Ministry temporarily cuts the excise duty on standard diesel in 15-day windows, through a new order for each window. This means the cut is not permanent: at the end of each window, the ministry decides whether to extend it, change it or let it expire.

What actually drives the diesel price
The pump price has four main components, and a price drop always comes from one of them:
- The international quotation (Brent / Platts). The most volatile component. When Brent falls in a sustained way, the drop gradually feeds through to the pump — you can compare the two series on the Brent vs. pump price chart.
- The exchange rate. Oil is traded in dollars; a stronger leu against the dollar makes the raw material cheaper even with Brent unchanged.
- Taxes: excise duty and VAT. The component the state can move overnight — as it is doing now with the temporary excise cuts in the calendar above. The full tax breakdown of the price is on excise transparency.
- Retail margins and local competition. The gap between stations in the same city can exceed the gap between cities — which is why it pays to compare locally, on minimum prices or the map.
There is also a general seasonal pattern: diesel demand rises in autumn (farm work and the start of the cold season), petrol demand in summer, during the holiday driving season. Seasonality shapes demand, but it does not guarantee a price direction — fiscal decisions and Brent can override it at any time.
Why we do not publish forecasts
Because nobody can make them honestly. Tomorrow's price depends on quotations, exchange rates and fiscal decisions that even analysts fail to anticipate consistently. What we can do correctly is measure: we collect prices from over 1,500 stations every 2 hours and publish the real change, plus the calendar of officially announced fiscal decisions. When diesel really does get cheaper, it shows up here the same day.

When one of the price components falls: the excise duty (see the calendar of temporary cuts above), the Brent quotation, the exchange rate or retail margins. The only drops with a date known in advance are the fiscal ones, announced officially — the rest only show up in measured data.
How big is the diesel excise cut?
The cut announced by the Finance Ministry was 20% of the standard diesel excise for 16–31 August 2026 and 25% for 1–15 September 2026. The effect at the pump also depends on the other factors, which is why we show the actually measured change in the table above, not an estimate.
Is petrol getting cheaper too?
The temporary excise cuts apply to standard diesel, not petrol. Petrol follows Brent, the exchange rate and competition; its measured change is in the same table above.
When do fuel prices drop in general?
There is no fixed calendar: on sustained Brent declines, when the leu strengthens, on tax cuts or when local competition intensifies. You can follow all these series on statistics.
