What is the vehicle inspection (ITP) and how often is it required?
ITP (Periodic Technical Inspection) checks the technical condition of your vehicle: brakes, steering, suspension, lights, emissions, body and chassis condition. The first ITP is due 3 years after the first registration, then every 2 years. For commercial vehicles and those over 12 years old, the frequency may differ.
How much does the vehicle inspection cost in 2026?
The ITP price ranges from 150 to 250 lei, depending on the station and vehicle type. If your car fails the ITP, you have 30 days to fix the issues and return to the same station for re-testing. The re-test only checks the points you failed. After 30 days, you must do a full ITP again.
What happens if I drive with an expired inspection?
The fine for an expired ITP is 1,305 β 2,900 lei, plus suspension of the registration certificate. Additionally, if you have an accident with an expired ITP, the RCA (liability insurance) may be partially or fully invalidated. The insurance company may refuse to pay damages citing negligence in vehicle maintenance.
Can I check the inspection with just the license plate number?
No, RAR requires the CIV series (from the vehicle identity card β the document with the yellow cover) or the VIN number (chassis number, 17 characters). This restriction exists for personal data protection reasons. You can find the VIN on the registration document, on the driver's door frame label, or on the windshield at the lower left.

The Periodic Technical Inspection (ITP) is the mandatory technical check that verifies whether your vehicle meets the minimum safety conditions for driving on public roads. The check is performed at ITP stations authorized by the Romanian Auto Registry (RAR) and includes testing of brakes, steering, suspension, lights, exhaust emissions, body and chassis condition.
The first technical inspection is due 3 years from the date of first registration, and subsequent ones every 2 years. For vehicles with a maximum authorized mass over 3.5 tonnes, buses, and taxis, the ITP is done annually.
