What is a vignette and when do I need one?
The vignette (rovinieta) is the road usage tax for national roads and highways in Romania. It is mandatory for all vehicles traveling on national roads (DN), European roads (E), and highways (A). You do not need a vignette within city limits or on communal/county roads.
How much does a vignette cost in 2026?
For passenger cars (category A): 1 day β 3 EUR (~15 lei), 7 days β 7 EUR (~35 lei), 30 days β 13 EUR (~65 lei), 90 days β 21 EUR (~105 lei), 12 months β 28 EUR (~140 lei). Prices vary depending on the vehicle category (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H). You can pay online at erovinieta.ro or at authorized points of sale.
What happens if I don't have a valid vignette?
The fine for not having a vignette ranges from 250 lei to 9,000 lei, depending on the vehicle category. For passenger cars (category A), the standard fine is approximately 1,000 lei. Detection is automatic through ANPR cameras installed on national roads and highways β you don't need to be pulled over by police.
Can I check the vignette without the chassis number?
The official CNAIR check requires both the license plate number and the chassis number (VIN). A workaround: on erovinieta.ro, if you try to buy a 1-day vignette entering only the license plate number, the system will automatically check if an active one already exists and notify you. This way you can find out if you have a vignette without entering the VIN.
What is the vehicle inspection (ITP) and how often is it required?
ITP (Periodic Technical Inspection) checks the technical condition of your vehicle: brakes, steering, suspension, lights, emissions, body and chassis condition. The first ITP is due 3 years after the first registration, then every 2 years. For commercial vehicles and those over 12 years old, the frequency may differ.
How much does the vehicle inspection cost in 2026?
The ITP price ranges from 150 to 250 lei, depending on the station and vehicle type. If your car fails the ITP, you have 30 days to fix the issues and return to the same station for re-testing. The re-test only checks the points you failed. After 30 days, you must do a full ITP again.
What happens if I drive with an expired inspection?
The fine for an expired ITP is 1,305 β 2,900 lei, plus suspension of the registration certificate. Additionally, if you have an accident with an expired ITP, the RCA (liability insurance) may be partially or fully invalidated. The insurance company may refuse to pay damages citing negligence in vehicle maintenance.
Can I check the inspection with just the license plate number?
No, RAR requires the CIV series (from the vehicle identity card β the document with the yellow cover) or the VIN number (chassis number, 17 characters). This restriction exists for personal data protection reasons. You can find the VIN on the registration document, on the driver's door frame label, or on the windshield at the lower left.
