CNG Price Romania 2026
Guide for drivers considering CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) as an alternative to petrol or diesel: how much it costs, where to refuel in Romania, what cars are compatible, when it's cost-effective. Indicative data updated 2026-05-11.
What is CNG?
CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is natural gas — the same that comes through the pipeline at home for the boiler — compressed to 200 bar and used as a third automotive fuel after petrol and diesel. Composition: ~95% methane, the rest nitrogen, CO₂ and higher hydrocarbons.
In Romania, automotive CNG is a small market (estimated 5,000–8,000 vehicles), but slowly growing thanks to lower energy cost and reduced emissions. For comparison, Italy has ~1 million CNG cars, Iran >4 million.
How much does CNG cost in Romania?
CNG price in Romania in 2026 ranges between 4.50 and 5.50 RON/kg, depending on station and natural gas supplier. Energy comparison:
| Fuel | Unit price | Consumption/100 km | Cost/100 km |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol 95 | ~7.80 RON/L | 7 L | 54.60 RON |
| Standard diesel | ~7.90 RON/L | 5.5 L | 43.45 RON |
| Auto LPG | ~3.80 RON/L | 9 L | 34.20 RON |
| CNG | ~5.00 RON/kg | 5.5 kg | 27.50 RON |
For a 25,000 km/year driver, the annual savings vs petrol are around 6,500–7,000 RON. Vs diesel, savings are ~4,000 RON/year.
Where to find CNG stations in Romania?
In 2026, Romania has approximately 20–25 public CNG stations. The list isn't exhaustive and changes — verify before long trips. Concentration:
- Bucharest and Ilfov: ~6–8 stations (Engie on Splaiul Unirii, Berceni, Pipera; Premier Energy near Otopeni)
- Timișoara: 2–3 stations (industrial zone + Calea Lugojului)
- Cluj-Napoca: 1–2 stations (Florești + Apahida area)
- Iași: 1 station (Bucium / Tudor Vladimirescu)
- Brașov, Sibiu, Constanța, Oradea, Craiova, Galați: 1 station each
- On long routes (motorways): rare — A1 Pitești, A2 Cernavodă (selected Petrom stations)
For an updated map, we recommend GibGas.de (European CNG station app) or the operator websites (Engie Romania, Premier Energy).
PretCarburant.ro doesn't currently aggregate CNG prices in the daily pipeline — for exact prices, call the station or check the board.
What cars run on CNG?
Factory (bivalent: CNG + petrol)
- VW eco up!, Skoda Citigo G-Tec, Seat Mii Ecofuel — small city cars (CNG range ~280 km plus ~200 km petrol)
- Audi A3 g-tron, Audi A4 g-tron, Audi A5 g-tron — premium sedan/coupe
- VW Golf TGI, VW Polo TGI, VW Passat TGI — mainstream models
- Skoda Octavia G-Tec, Seat Leon TGI
- Fiat Panda Natural Power, Fiat 500L Natural Power
- Mercedes E 200 NGD, Mercedes B 200 Natural Gas Drive
- Iveco Daily CNG (vans), MAN/Mercedes/Iveco CNG trucks
Note: most of these were discontinued in 2024–2025 due to the electric transition. On the used market, you'll find imports from Italy/Germany.
Aftermarket (post-factory CNG installation)
Any petrol car (preferably with at least a 1.4 L engine) can get an aftermarket CNG installation. Cost: 5,000–10,000 RON for kit + installation + RAR homologation. Common targets: Logan Sandero, Skoda Octavia, VW Golf, BMW 3-series — frequent in taxis and corporate fleets.
When is CNG cost-effective?
CNG is cost-effective if you tick 3 boxes:
- Drive at least 20,000 km/year — below this, annual savings won't cover the investment in <3 years.
- Travel on fixed routes — Bucharest↔Cluj, Timișoara↔Arad, daily commute. With only 25 stations, beach or Maramureș trips are tricky.
- Have a factory model or accept the install — aftermarket kit is non-trivial (200 bar tank, RAR homologation, periodic checks).
Ideal profile: Bucharest Uber/Bolt driver with Octavia G-Tec or VW Golf TGI; corporate fleet on fixed routes; intercity taxi.
CNG downsides
- Limited network — 25 stations vs 1,500+ gas stations. Requires planning.
- Reduced trunk space — aftermarket installations occupy part of the trunk.
- Power loss — ~10% on CNG vs petrol. Not dramatic for urban use.
- Mandatory inspections — RAR every 4 years for the tank, plus annual (200–400 RON).
- Installation cost — >5,000 RON for aftermarket; factory cars are 5–10% more expensive vs petrol versions.
- Gradual market exit — manufacturers reduce CNG offering in favor of electric. Fewer new cars.
