Electric vs diesel monthly cost: real comparator Romania 2026
With diesel at 8.40 RON/L and electricity at 0.98 RON/kWh at home, running an EV in Romania 2026 is 3 times cheaper than an equivalent diesel — at a 18,000 km annual mileage. But purchase price, depreciation, range, charging infrastructure and usage style all change the equation. We compare a Tesla Model 3 (60 kWh, 491 km WLTP) against a Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI (5.5 L/100km, 1,000 km real range) and compute real TCO over 100,000 km.
1. Energy cost per 100 km
Let's start with the kilometre as our standard unit. The Tesla Model 3 RWD consumes about 15 kWh/100 km in real mixed conditions (city + highway), while the Octavia 1.6 TDI burns 5.5 L/100 km:
- EV (home charging, 0.98 RON/kWh): 15 × 0.98 = 14.70 RON/100 km;
- EV (DC fast charger, 2.40 RON/kWh): 15 × 2.40 = 36.00 RON/100 km;
- Diesel (8.40 RON/L): 5.5 × 8.40 = 46.20 RON/100 km.
Conclusion: even with fast charging, the EV is 22% cheaper than diesel; with overnight home charging it's 3.1x cheaper.
2. Real monthly cost — average driver
A typical Romanian driver does 1,500 km/month (18,000 km/year), 80% urban/peri-urban:
- Tesla Model 3 (100% home overnight): 1,500 × 0.147 = 220 RON/month;
- Tesla Model 3 (50% home, 50% public): 750 × 0.147 + 750 × 0.360 = 110 + 270 = 380 RON/month;
- Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI: 1,500 × 0.462 = 693 RON/month.
Monthly gap between home-charged EV and diesel = 473 RON/month or ~5,700 RON/year in favour of the EV. See today's diesel price on pretcarburant.ro to recompute with current values.
3. Full TCO over 100,000 km
Total Cost of Ownership over 5 years (~18,000 km/year × 5 = 90,000 km, rounded to 100,000):
| Component | Tesla Model 3 60 kWh | Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI |
|---|---|---|
| New purchase price | 190,000 RON | 110,000 RON |
| Rabla Plus subsidy | -51,000 RON | 0 RON |
| Energy 100k km | 14,700 RON (home) | 46,200 RON (diesel) |
| Service+maintenance | 3,500 RON | 9,500 RON |
| Tyres | 5,000 RON | 4,000 RON |
| Insurance RCA+CASCO | 22,000 RON | 17,000 RON |
| 5-year depreciation (40%) | 76,000 RON | 44,000 RON |
| Total TCO | 260,200 RON | 230,700 RON |
5-year final gap = +29,500 RON for the EV (with Rabla subsidy). Without subsidy the gap rises to 80,500 RON in diesel's favour.
4. Break-even point
The EV becomes financially competitive at higher mileage. For a driver doing 30,000 km/year, EV energy costs 4,410 RON/year vs 13,860 RON for diesel — a 9,450 RON/year gap. Over 5 years that's 47,250 RON of energy savings, covering the price gap. For a taxi or courier (40,000-50,000 km/year), the EV reaches break-even in 3-4 years.
For an urban driver at 8,000-10,000 km/year, diesel remains cheaper on TCO — the upfront price gap is never recovered.
5. Charging infrastructure
Romania 2026 has roughly 4,500 active public charging points (versus 1,200 in 2022), per the Romanian Electromobility Association. Coverage along the main highways (A1, A2, A3) is complete; rural areas in the north-east and south-west still have white spots. See our EV charging map to verify availability live.
Average charging times:
- Home wallbox 7.4 kW: 10 hours for 75 kWh (overnight);
- Three-phase wallbox 11 kW: 7 hours for 75 kWh;
- DC fast charger 50 kW: 80 minutes to 80%;
- Ultra-fast 150-250 kW: 25-30 minutes to 80%.
6. 2026 fiscal advantages
- Rabla Plus subsidy: 51,000 RON for new EVs + 26,000 RON classic Rabla (total 77,000 RON when scrapping a vehicle older than 8 years);
- Auto tax exemption: 100% exemption from annual local vehicle tax for EVs;
- Free parking: in many cities (Bucharest zones 1-3, Cluj, Brasov);
- City access: exemption from restricted-zone access fees (planned in Bucharest);
- Business deduction: 100% depreciation over 4 years, no 50% cap (special regime for EVs and plug-in hybrids below 80 g CO2/km).
7. Recommendations by profile
- Urban driver <10,000 km/year: diesel or hybrid petrol (lower TCO);
- Commuter 15,000-25,000 km/year, own parking: EV with home wallbox (4-5 year break-even with subsidy);
- Business travel 30,000+ km/year: EV immediately (2-3 year ROI, accelerated depreciation);
- Long-distance international courier: still diesel — highway charging requires careful planning;
- Two-car family: combination EV (daily) + diesel/petrol (long holidays).
