Romanian Emergency Ordinance 19/2026 active: fuel commercial markups are capped at 2025 average levels during 1 April — 30 June 2026. This is why major networks (MOL, OMV, Lukoil, Socar, Gazprom) display a uniform nationwide price per brand. Real per-station variation remains at Rompetrol and independent stations. AdBlue Price Romania 2026

Practical guide for Euro 6 diesel drivers: how much AdBlue costs at the pump vs in bulk, where to find it, consumption rates, what you need to know to avoid running out on the motorway. Indicative prices updated 2026-05-11.

How much does AdBlue cost in Romania?

AdBlue price in Romania varies dramatically by purchase channel. The same 32.5% urea solution costs 3–5× more in canisters at gas stations than in bulk. For a typical Euro 6 driver (~20 L/year consumption), the annual difference can reach 200–250 RON.

Indicative AdBlue prices in Romania, May 2026
Purchase channelPrice (RON/L)ProsCons
Bulk at the pump (Petrom, OMV, Rompetrol, MOL) 3.00 – 6.00 Cheapest, no canister waste, fast refill Only at large stations (motorways, big cities)
5 L canisters at gas stations 5.00 – 10.00 Available almost anywhere Big station markup, plastic waste
10 L canisters at gas stations 4.50 – 8.50 Better price/L than 5 L canister Still pricier than bulk
Auto stores / supermarkets (Auchan, Carrefour, OMW) 4.00 – 7.00 Frequent good promotions Inconsistent stock
B2B orders / tanker delivery 2.50 – 4.50 Cheapest for fleets >10 cars Minimum order, own storage needed

Prices are indicative, sourced from public channels (network sites, retail stores). PretCarburant.ro doesn't aggregate AdBlue in the daily price pipeline — for exact station prices, call ahead or check the station board.

What is AdBlue and why do you need it?

AdBlue is a 32.5% urea + 67.5% demineralized water solution used in Euro 6 diesel engines to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Also called DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) in the US, or ARLA-32 in Brazil. ISO 22241 standardizes its composition.

Urea, injected into the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, reacts with hot NOx and converts it to nitrogen and water, cutting emissions by up to 90%. Without AdBlue, a Euro 6 engine can't meet legal emission limits and the ECU enters protect mode (limp mode or, on some models, no-start).

In Romania, AdBlue is de facto mandatory for all diesel cars registered after 2014, when Euro 6 became the legal requirement. Trucks and buses use AdBlue similarly under Euro 5 (2008+) and Euro 6.

Where can I find AdBlue at the pump?

Romania has approximately 200–250 stations with bulk AdBlue at the pump in 2026. Distribution concentrates on motorways (A1, A2, A3) and large cities. Major networks offering bulk AdBlue:

  • Petrom — largest Romanian bulk AdBlue coverage (~80 stations), including nearly all motorway stations.
  • OMV — ~60 stations with AdBlue, mainly motorways and county capitals.
  • Rompetrol — ~50 stations with AdBlue, especially on long routes.
  • MOL — ~40 stations with AdBlue in Transylvania and northern Romania.
  • Lukoil — available occasionally, mainly at large stations.
  • Independent stations — rare, generally no AdBlue pump.

To find the closest bulk AdBlue station:

  1. Use network apps (MyOMV, Petrom Drive, MOL Move) — they have AdBlue filters.
  2. On long trips, plan stops at motorway stations — almost certainly have AdBlue.
  3. In big cities (Bucharest, Cluj, Timișoara, Iași), Petrom and OMV ring-road stations have AdBlue.

How much AdBlue does a Euro 6 diesel car consume?

AdBlue consumption depends on engine size, driving style, and fuel quality. Rules of thumb:

  • Diesel car 1.6 – 2.0 (Skoda, VW, Renault, Dacia, Ford): 1 L AdBlue per 800–1,200 km. ~15–25 L/year.
  • Diesel car 3.0 – 4.0 (BMW, Mercedes, Audi premium): 1 L per 600–900 km. ~25–35 L/year.
  • SUV / Pickup diesel (X5, Q7, Touareg, Duster): 1 L per 700–1,000 km. ~20–30 L/year.
  • Truck 7.5 t – 40 t: ~5% of diesel consumption. For 100,000 km/year at 30 L/100 km diesel, ~1,500 L AdBlue/year.

For an average car driver with 20,000 km/year, annual AdBlue cost ranges from 60 RON (bulk) to 250 RON (canisters). The gap justifies seeking bulk refills.

Common AdBlue mistakes

  • Pouring AdBlue into the diesel tank — destroys the high-pressure pump and injectors. Repair: 5,000–15,000 RON. The AdBlue cap is narrower and marked "AdBlue" or in blue, but accidents happen. If you mistake: do NOT start the engine, call a tow service.
  • Using industrial or improvised urea — concentration and purity matter. "Agricultural-grade urea" causes SCR deposits leading to catalyst replacement (3,000–8,000 RON).
  • Ignoring the dashboard warning — most ECUs refuse to start after 0 km of AdBlue. Warning appears at 2,400 km remaining and escalates.
  • Buying expired AdBlue — check expiration on the canister (typically 18–24 months). Expired AdBlue loses concentration and triggers SCR errors.
