The PretCarburant.ro fuel savings calculator estimates the cost of a trip (liters used × fuel price) and how much you save by refueling at the cheapest station instead of the most expensive one in your departure city. You enter your car's average consumption (l/100 km), departure and destination city, and the calculator uses real prices from local gas stations (updated November 1, 2026) to show the total trip cost and how many lei you save per month and per year by refueling smarter.

Formula: how to calculate consumption and trip cost
- Consumption (l/100 km) = litres refuelled × 100 ÷ kilometres driven between two fill-ups
- Litres for a trip = kilometres × consumption ÷ 100
- Trip cost = litres × price per litre; a return trip costs twice the one-way trip
- Cost per 100 km = consumption × price per litre

How the fuel cost calculator works
The calculator estimates fuel costs using available prices in the departure city. The estimate depends on the distance entered and your car’s consumption; it excludes tolls, parking and other expenses.
- Choose departure and destination city — enter the distance from your navigation app or use the automatic approximation (straight-line distance × 1.3).
- Enter your average consumption — if you don't know it, calculate it with the "How much does my car use?" module from kilometers driven and liters refueled.
- Select the fuel type: petrol 95, diesel or LPG.
- See the compared result: the lowest and highest prices in the departure city, estimated fuel costs and the difference between the two options.
Consumption formula: consumption (l/100 km) = liters refueled × 100 ÷ kilometers driven. Example: 35 liters over 500 km means 7 l/100 km.

The price difference between the cheapest and most expensive liter of fuel in the same city may seem small (20-40 bani), but on a long trip of 300+ km, the savings reach 10-20 lei per trip. Multiplied by the number of trips per month, the annual savings can exceed 500 lei.

Frequently asked questions about fuel consumption and trip cost
How do you calculate fuel consumption per 100 km?
Fill the tank and note the odometer. At the next fill-up, divide the litres added by the kilometres driven between the two fill-ups and multiply by 100: consumption (l/100 km) = litres × 100 ÷ km. For example, 39 litres over 520 km means 7.5 l/100 km. The “How much does my car use?” module on this page does the calculation for you.
How many litres does a car use on a trip?
Litres = distance in km × consumption in l/100 km ÷ 100. For 300 km at 6 l/100 km: 300 × 6 ÷ 100 = 18 litres. At the average price of standard diesel on November 1, 2026, 10.90 RON/l, those 18 litres cost 196.20 RON.
How much do 100 km cost with petrol, diesel or LPG?
The cost per 100 km is consumption in l/100 km times the price per litre. At the typical consumption used in our examples (petrol 7 l, diesel 6 l and LPG 9 l per 100 km) and the average prices on November 1, 2026, 100 km cost 70.35 RON with petrol, 65.40 RON with diesel and 42.39 RON with LPG. The table on this page gives the cost for consumption between 4 and 12 l/100 km.
How do I calculate the cost of a return trip?
Double the distance: cost = 2 × km × consumption ÷ 100 × price per litre. In the calculator above, tick “Return trip”. For example, București–Brașov is 182 km by road; a return trip at 6 l/100 km on diesel means 21.8 litres and 238.06 RON at the average price on November 1, 2026.
What is the average car consumption?
An average petrol car consumes between 5 and 8 l/100 km in mixed traffic, while a diesel car consumes between 4.5 and 7 l/100 km. SUVs and large cars can reach 9–12 l/100 km, while compact cars with small engines can go below 5 l/100 km. The calculator starts at 7.5 l/100 km, but you can enter your own car’s consumption.
Which is cheaper per 100 km, petrol or diesel?
It depends on the price per litre and on your car's consumption. With the average prices on November 1, 2026 (standard petrol 10.05 RON/l, standard diesel 10.90 RON/l) and typical consumption of 7 l and 6 l per 100 km respectively, 100 km cost 70.35 RON with petrol and 65.40 RON with diesel, so diesel is 4.95 RON cheaper per 100 km. Diesel engines usually use less fuel, so diesel can be cheaper per kilometre even when the litre costs more.
Where do the calculator’s prices come from?
Prices are collected from 1376 gas stations in Romania and updated several times a day from public sources (the ANPC Price Monitor and the direct SOCAR feed). The trip calculation uses the lowest and highest price in the departure city, while the table and the examples use the national average on November 1, 2026.
